Resolve to make a difference in 2019—and do it right here in our community! Don’t miss your chance to be part of this amazing opportunity to advance the safety of our Oviedo schools!

In recent years, mass shootings and violence in our schools and around the nation has caused us to wonder what we can do to make a difference. As we spoke with Dr. Walt Griffin, Superintendent of Seminole County Schools, and Captain Rick Francis of Seminole County Sheriff's School Safety Division, it was determined that many of our schools need more and updated security cameras.

The Oviedo Church Community wants to partner with its residents in this worthwhile endeavor so we are asking businesses, parents and other concerned individuals to join us. Our hope is to expedite Seminole County's 5-year-plan into a 3-year-plan by raising funds to purchase the necessary security cameras to improve school safety.

With the mass shootings and violence taking place in our schools and around the nation, I found myself wondering what we could do to make a difference. As a local pastor I wondered, “What if the churches of Oviedo could bring the community together to do something significant to secure our schools?”

After speaking with Dr. Walt Griffin, Superintendent of Seminole County Schools and Captain Rick Francis of Seminole County Sheriff’s School Safety Division, it was determined that many of our schools need more and updated security cameras. Although the Sheriff’s Office is working toward a goal of securing all Seminole County schools within 5 years, we agreed that it is too long—much can happen in 5 years.

Several churches and business leaders in Oviedo are working together to sponsor a golf tournament for the purpose of raising funds to equip Oviedo schools with the cameras. We are asking businesses, parents and other concerned individuals to join us in this effort so we can make it happen. Our plan is to begin with Oviedo and Hagerty High Schools and add other schools as funds allow. This web site outlines how you can help. We are excited to be partnering with you for such a needed cause!

Secure Oviedo Schools will aid in expediting the safety projects we have planned for Seminole County Public Schools. I am so appreciative of the generosity and sincerity of our residents to assist us in this necessary, ongoing, and expensive endeavor.

I am excited to partner with churches in the Oviedo community on a school safety project that will help protect our most vulnerable citizens of Seminole County. A safe school is a place where students can learn and teachers can teach free of intimidation and fear. Creating safe, orderly, and welcoming learning environments is critical to educating and preparing all of our children and youth to achieve their highest potential.

I heartily express my endorsement for the Secure Oviedo Schools project. Incredible things happen when a community comes together, and we inspire each other. Protecting our children and educators is of the utmost importance, and this project is a positive step for our community.
